ReliaTech’s Grand Opening/ Community Computer Fix-it Day

January 17, 2004

San Pablo, CA

It’s the grand opening of “ReliaTech” today, a for-profit business designed to put graduating Street Tech students to work by offering computer maintenance and repair services to the public, businesses, schools and non-profit organizations.

ReliaTech is project of Street Tech, the original organization designed to inspire, motivate and teach members of local bay area communities using information technology.

Bred from this vision, ReliaTech offers a number of services to the community, including computer repair, wireless home internet DSL installations, desktop and networking support.

The addition of the new ReliaTech storefront will provide a gateway for the computing needs of the community.

The mood is high today, as the new business gets off to a good start by providing free computer servicing to the first lucky 30 thirty people at “Community Computer Fix-It Day”. Leconte Dill from Richmond was one of the lucky ones: “I think [this is] wonderful, it’s getting people up and active on a Saturday…the free computer support is really necessary especially in these tough economic times.”

Linda Cherry from San Pablo, put emphasis on the word very when asked what she thought about the new business. “I think [ReliaTech] is a very creative way to support a non-profit educational institution.”

As noontime approached, crowds of people outside of the facility gathered together for the grand opening ceremony. Shortly after Street Tech Executive Director Paul Lamb addresses the crowd, Wells Fargo representatives presented a $20,000 check to the new business.

Symbolizing the official start of business, the red ribbon was cut, and prizes including Microsoft software, games and computers are raffled away to lucky non-profits, churches and schools. Kindergarten school founder Zamahara Berkov-Rojas won 5 computers for her school and said she would put them to use in her classrooms.

While mingling and conversation continued outside, behind the scenes lead technician Melvin Posada worked hard assisting techs and making sure orders where in place, “my goal is to be a mentor for the technicians, and hopefully implement good strategies and a good work ethic so that ReliaTech can succeed.”

CEO of ReliaTech Jessy Gonzalez commented on the future of the business, “I see partnerships with businesses in the community, partnerships with other computer services locally; there are many things that ReliaTech is going to get into.”

Graduation Day

The Generation 7 Graduation Ceremony went extremely well.  There were 70 people attending the ceremony and the graduates included members of the Microsoft Certified Professional Preparation, A+, and Computer Apprenticeship Training Classes.  80% of the students who graduated were certified as technicians.  CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES, YOU WORKED HARD AND YOU FINALLY DID IT!!!!!!!!!

Our first guest speaker was no other than the Comedian, Doug Ferrari.  Mr. Ferrari was born and lives in San Francisco.  He’s married to a lovely woman named Beth.  He has appeared on television and writes scripts for other famous comedians.  Many that came to the graduation ceremony would say that he is really funny.  Words cannot really describe how funny he was, you would have to be there to fully get it.

Microsoft General Manager for Northern California, Laura Wallace, presented a check to Street Tech for $30,000, as part of the Microsoft Unlimited Potential program supporting community technology efforts around the world.

Some of you might know our very own Street Tech student, Jerry Thomas, from the Spring 2002 Computer Apprenticeship Training class.  He passed away tragically last summer, so in honor of his life a Scholarship Fund was set up in his name.  The winner for the Jerry Thomas Scholarship was given to A+ graduate Randy Arevalo.  Jerry will be greatly missed by those he came in contact with.  We will miss you, Jerry! Each class teacher then handed out certificates to their respective students.

We, the Street Tech students, would like to take this opportunity to thank our families, and friends for the great support.  Without you we would not have made it to the graduation.  You play a great role in our lives; we appreciate and thank you for your incredible support.  We also want to thank our main speaker Mr. Ferrari and his wife Beth for making us laugh.  We especially appreciate and wanted to extend our gratitude to Microsoft for the great check you brought and also the Microsoft staff support.  We hope to see many of you who were not able to attend this graduation to attend the next graduation.  Above all else, THANK YOU Street Tech staff! Without you there would not be a Street Tech. We the community of Contra Costa County appreciate each and every one of you.

Meet the Staff: ReliaTech Lead Technician Melvin Posada

Melvin Posada

ReliaTech Lead Technician

Along with the new ReliaTech job vision for graduating Street Tech students there have come new ReliaTech employees. Melvin Posada is one such new employee. CEO Jessy Gonzalez came to know Posada through a mutual friend and offered him a job as Lead Technician, responsible for training and further coaching fresh and hungry ReliaTech employees.

It’s a good thing that IT training and coaching is nothing new to Melvin. From assisting users at Spanish speaking Internet stations, managing and holding tech positions at AT&T and the Good Guys, to working at I-net Support as a Network Engineer, Posada has held his share of tech and training positions.

Interested in IT ever since he first learned how to play video games at home, Melvin is also currently enrolled at SF State where he is majoring in Computer Science. He says he someday hopes to take on more challenges in the IT field and enjoys the mental aspects of troubleshooting and finding answers to tough IT questions. “I feel alive when my mind is working, so by people bringing problems, ideas, and questions, that makes me feel like my brain is working.”
